114 biogas plants launched in Brazil in 2022
According to a survey by the International Center for Renewable Energy and Biogas (CIBiogas), a total of 114 new biogas launched operations in Brazil in 2022, up by 15% compared to 2021, Valor Economico International reported.
This brought the total number of biogas plants in the country to 936, of which 885 are currently into operation and produce around 2.8bn m3 per year.
A total of 86% of the plants in operation produced electricity. Their 2022 output amounted to 2.08bn m3, converting 72% of Brazilian biogas. These plants are typically located in farming areas, which have difficulties getting quality energy.
CIBiogas President Rafael González said there has been a noticeable growth in the volume of biogas dedicated to producing biomethane. According to the survey, 20 plants produced biomethane, converting about 22% of all biogas produced in Brazil into 359.8bn m3 of biomethane.
Landfills were the most significant biogas contributors, however, Gonzalez pointed out that agribusiness is expected to dominate the production of biogas and biomethane in Brazil in the future.
Data from the Brazilian Biogas Association suggests that 65 new biogas plants with an installed capacity of 6mn m³ per day, can be put into operation until 2029.
